Fuel without fiscal stimulus? What’s changing this Easter Week

In the midst of the holiday season, Mexico’s Ministry of Finance (Secretaría de Hacienda) announced a decision that directly impacts the national economy: starting Saturday, April 12, the fiscal stimuli on gasoline and diesel have been temporarily eliminated. This means that, during these weeks, consumers will pay the full Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) on each liter of fuel.
What does this mean for consumers?
When the fiscal stimulus is in place, the government absorbs a portion of the tax normally paid on each liter of gasoline. However, with this temporary suspension, prices may increase directly at the pump, depending on the station and region.
Regular gasoline (Magna): will pay the full IEPS of MXN $6.45 per liter.
• Premium gasoline: has received no stimulus since October 2023; the IEPS remains at MXN $5.45 per liter.
• Diesel: also without stimulus, with an IEPS of MXN $7.09 per liter.
What about the MXN $24 price cap?
Despite this adjustment, the federal government has reaffirmed its intention to avoid sudden fuel price hikes. To that end, an agreement was announced with gas station operators to set a maximum price of MXN $24 per liter. While this is not an official price control, it does reflect a commitment to active oversight.
The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has begun enforcing this commitment by placing visible signs at stations that exceed the price cap and by launching an interactive map that shows which stations offer “fair prices.”
Our recommendation
